Counting pills,

not syllables.

Red and black,

black and yellow

pills

shaken

like maracas

or dice

in cupped hands.

Mountain pills

tumbling

from great heights.

River pills

flowing through

the body.

A whole world

synthesized

and swallowed

by science.

If I Weren’t a Poet, I’d Be a Bouncer

Flashing a surly scowl.

Drawing a line

and daring anyone

(even me)

to cross it

out.

An Opening

Suspended in the amber

of my habitual.

Cross-purposes

loop the loop.

Lose next turn.

Lose next turn

until some outside

finally arrives —

even if only a sliver

of moon

slipped like a letter

under the door.
